about

Self
Originally released as a Limited edition Bonus CDr to Three

In 2003, Dene Bebbington reviewed “Three” for Wind and Wire Magazine:
“…When it comes to creating haunting, shifting, and nuanced drifts and drones of electronic tonalities then Matthew Florianz is without a doubt one of the best judging by this album. Imagine the organic and gossamer elements of Diatonis, the drones of John Broaddus, and the drifting ambience of Thom Brennan and you'll have some idea of what Three has to offer…”

Self was released as a limited edition CD-r alongside Three, featuring similar tonal and drone soundscapes. However, it has more in common with the album Niemandsland released in 2006. Both albums explore themes such as depression, bullying, low self-esteem, fear of failure, and the journey of overcoming such challenges. The sound of exploring the outdoors is also woven into both and if GrijsGebied explored the greyish cityscape of living in The Hague, then Self explores the surrounding dunes in the dead of night.

The deeply personal themes of Self and Niemandsland have made it difficult for me to release them on Bandcamp. Revisiting these albums, and the repeated listens required for re-mastering, wasn’t an enticing prospect for the longest time. However, if creating music is a form of self-medication, then re-mastering surely is a form of healing. With enough distance, I’ve regained an appreciation for what both albums aim to accomplish.

One final note on the above: I don’t wish to imply that the themes discussed are necessary interpretations of Self or Niemandsland. The titles and tracks might hint at such but I also think the music is abstract enough to fit more personal narratives. Ambient music's attraction, lies in its ability to allow for individual interpretations. community_selfCD.jpg
